Acetylene Gas Lighting, 1917

N Z Acetylene Gas Lighting Co., Warehouse and Offices, Tory St, 1917
BFA Collection.
Architects: Crichton and McKay.

The N Z Acetylene Gas Lighting Co were a Dunedin based company that was formed in the early 1880s to promote the use of acetylene as an alternative to coal gas for lighting houses. While electric lighting had been available in Wellington since 1889 it is likely areas further afield relied on gas, for example the Paekakariki Hotel (Crichton & McKay, 1909) was designed with acetylene lighting.

The floor plans indicate a show room, office and store on the ground floor with an internal lift connecting the store to two upper floors. The use of the upper floors is not indicated on the drawings.
