M Cargill Shop 1894

Shop and Dweling for M Cargill, Jackson St., Petone, 1894
Alan Bulleyment Collection
Architect: William Crichton.
HZHTP Register no: 7369

Martin Cargill was a baker, whom according to the Cyclopedia of New Zealand, was 'said to be' the first in Petone. Prior to this building he had the shop next door, indicated on the plan as 'existing premises' and before that a shop opposite on the corner of Jackson and Fitzherbert Streets. Martin and his wife Jemima had six children. He may have lived over the shop in the 1890s but by the time he died in 1913 the family were living in Buick St. Two of his sons were killed in the great war.

The drawings also indicate a two level 'out building' with a large walk in oven and adjacent stables.

The 'new' shop at 91 Jackson St is now 'Black Olive Restaurant' and the old shop is the 'Dutch Shop' The verandah and shopfront have been modified but above that level the building appears to be little changed. NZHTP have registered all the historic part of Jackson St under the above number.
