Ewart Nurses Home 1909

Ewart Hospital, Nurses Home, 1909
Alan Bulleyment Collection
Architect: Crichton and McKay.
NZHPT: register no. 5375, category II

This drawing may claim it is an 'administrative building' on the Wellington Hospital campus but in fact it is configured as a nurses home and was intended to isolate those working in the infectious diseases hospital (later renamed Ewart Hospital). It remained in use for many years as a nurses home until both Ewart and the nearby fever hospital were closed. In 1980 it became the Wellington abortion clinic (renamed Parkview), at the time it was subject to much controversy and protest. Abortion services were moved to the main hospital campus in 2000.

Parkview and the nearby 1920 fever hospital (which is about to be converted for use by the SPCA) are the last Crichton and McKay designed hospital buildings in Wellington.
